I.T.C.I. International T.E.F.L. Training Courses provide thorough training in all aspects of Teaching English as a Foreign language leading to a full 'International T.E.F.L. Certificate'. These courses are intended for all proficient users of English with a good educational background. Candidates are not required to have had any previous experience in T.E.F.L. and both graduates and non-graduates may enrol on these courses.

I.T.C.I. piloted the Department of Education ELT Teacher Registration and Qualifications Recognition Project. The aim of the project is to assure the quality and standards of pre-ELT career awards provided in Ireland.

T.E.F.L. Teacher Training Courses

The International T.E.F.L. College of Ireland was founded in 1989 and specializes in T.E.F.L. Teacher Training Courses in Westland Row and English Classes for foreign students in Dun Laoghaire - recognised by the Department of Education and Science for the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language. T.E.F.L. Teacher Training Courses are held all year round at CBS, Westland Row, Dublin 2 which is 2/3 minutes walk from Pearse Train/Dart Station, Westland Row, Dublin 2. There is ample parking around the College - parking is free on Saturday and Sunday.

Course Features

    Individual Feedback.

  • Specially prepared detailed handouts which are very helpful for the preparation of Project and Lesson Planning.



Requirements

During the course trainees will be required to attend lectures, prepare lesson plans, take part in teaching practice sessions using a variety of classroom teaching aids and complete a practical project and portfolio, and sit the written examination at the end of the course. Trainees who attend less than 80% of the timetabled contact hours will not be awarded a certificate. However, in certain circumstances, they may be given an opportunity to complete the course at a later date.



Course Content

  1. Language Awareness:
    • introduction to grammar, syntax & lexis.
    • varieties of English.
  2. Language Teaching and Learning : Approaches, Methods & Techniques.
  3. Classroom Management and Methodology.
  4. Language Learning Activities: Games, Role Play, Drama, Humour, Song etc.
  5. "Hands-On" Experience of the use of a range of teaching aids: whiteboard, flip-chart, O.H.P. (preparation and use of transparencies) tape-recorder, T.V., DVD/video-recorder, flashcards, charts, realia etc.
  6. Phonetics / Phonology: basic principles of phonology - stress, intonation etc. Correcting Pronunciation.
  7. English for Special/Specific Purposes. (E.S.P.) Business English, Scientific English etc.
  8. Evaluation of Course Materials: books, teaching/learning materials and suggestions for use.
  9. Teaching the Four Skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
    • Methodology and demonstration lessons by Tutors.
  10. Teaching Practice Sessions: Grammar, Listening, Reading & DVD/Video.
  11. Observation of live or recorded classes.
  12. A Practical Project. (Home-Study or College Workshops)
  13. Portfolio.



Certification and Assessment

Certification is based on the following:
  1. Written examination at the end of course. (60%)
  2. Portfolio of course work. (20%)
  3. Practical Project. (20%)
Successful candidates are awarded an International Graded Teaching Certificate in T.E.F.L.  A written report is issued to all candidates.  Assessment of candidates is externally moderated.



International Placement

In addition to awarding a recognised International T.E.F.L. Certificate, the College has an International Placement Network of Language Schools world-wide, that is, we place E.F.L. Teachers in year-long contracts and on Summer/Intensive courses in Ireland and abroad.

During the course you will be advised on the pitfalls and restrictions in certain countries. In Greece and Turkey, to obtain a teaching Licence, E.F.L. Teachers must have a Degree preferably in Modern Languages or English. In all other countries world-wide it is up to the individual Language Schools to decide on the qualification of the E.F.L teachers they employ.

The College has had very high placement success rates since 1989.

Course fee structure

100 Hour Course Fee: 500 Euro. Booking deposit: 150 Euro.
Balance of fee: 350 Euro due at registration on the first day of the Course - half an hour before lectures commence.

Lecturers/Trainers

All Lectures/Trainers are University Graduates with Higher Diplomas in Education and many years Teaching/Training Experience in T.E.F.L., both at home and abroad. In addition, they have Post-Graduate Qualifications in T.E.F.L. and are presently managing and/or teaching EFL at the I.T.C.I. ( Recognised College). I.T.C.I. piloted the Department of Education ELT Registration and Qualifications Recognition Project.
